How to use AI to enhance your English learning

Many of you will be talking to your favourite chatbot (Gemini, Claude or Chatgpt) in Spanish – which is a wasted opportunity. You need to talk to it in English.

If you ask questions in English it will automatically answer you in English. If you make a mistake it will tell you or you can ask it to explain what mistakes you have made. This is like your own personal teacher.

Using AI chatbots can either be super helpful or overwhelming. They are best used for vocabulary and grammar but often give you an enormous amount of information. The trick is to ask it correctly. To give it the right prompt.

Using AI for English Vocabulary

Example prompts.
Give me a concise list of the most important vocabulary related to fashion for B2 English learners.
List the most relevant collocations and phrasal verbs related to fashion for B2 English learners.

Using AI for English Grammar

Example prompts.
Summarise the rules and uses for the passive for B2 English learners and provide examples.
Briefly summarise how to make the passive and give examples for B2 level English learners.

Use words like summarise, concise, summary, list or you will get too much information. AI Chatbots like to show off and tell you every single detail about something which can be overwhelming.

Using AI for English Writing

Never give your teacher a writing written by an AI chatbot or that is corrected or translated by a chatbot. It is an absolute waste of time.

You can and should, however, use your chatbot to ask for examples of specific writing types. This can give you ideas and help you with understanding register. You can also use it to check structure and layout.

Examples
Write a short essay on the benefits and drawbacks of locally grown food. Style semi-formal at level B2 in English.

Create an example 4 paragraph report based on the title _________. Style semi-formal at B2 level in English.

You can even ask your chatbot to highlight topic specific vocabulary or verb patterns in the writing it has created. When it has given you your report to can ask it to:

Highlight all examples of collocations in the essay.
Underline all examples of verb patterns in the report.

Summary

Learning how to use AI in the best way is a very good thing for your English learning. Try different prompts and questions – but always in English. Don’t be tempted to ask for higher level vocabulary etc. You won’t see it in your exam.
